Harley Schmirler, drummer and vocalist harleybio
for Whiplash, began playing
drums at age 12, and eventually hooked up with Brian Witt and Tom Innis to form the first iteration of Whiplash in 1980. Harley’s addition to
the Whiplash lineup was key to the band’s early success and attainment
of several gigs in the La Follette High party scene, and his presence
was immediately felt in adding a crucial element to the band’s vibe.

After the first Whiplash stint in the early 80’s, Harley collaborated with Innis
in the Madison-based heavy metal band Surgeon General, which
disbanded in 1986 after several Madison area performances. The
Witt/Schmirler/Innis triumvirate then resurfaced in 1986 with the Rex
Kramer power trio, which recorded the original songs “Strike Me Down”
and “Welcome to the Party” at Smart Studios in Madison in 1987.
Following Innis’ relocation to Denver, Colorado, Rex Kramer finished its
run and Harley played sporadically until Whiplash’s “BW-40” reunion
party in November, 2003.

Displaying a steady rhythm and an energetic presence behind the drum
kit, Harley’s first inspirations were Neil Peart of Rush, Bun E. Carlos of
Cheap Trick, Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, and other renowned drummers
of the hard rock era. Harley has since developed his own style, and has
recently added lead and backing vocals to his repertoire with Whiplash.

Harley’s current drum kit is a five-piece Tama Swingstar™, which he
augments with Zildjian™ and Paiste™ cymbals. He prefers Remo™ drum
heads for best sound and maximum durability during live performances.
